Duluth Harbor South Breakwater Outer Light

A Historic Landmark

A Light Guiding Since 1901

A Historic Building

Positioned on the Canal Park pier, the South Breakwater Outer Light has stood as a beacon since 1901, joining two other nearby lighthouses.

While LSMMA now owns the structure, the U.S. Coast Guard continues to operate the active Aid to Navigation light and foghorn within the building to ensure safe harbor passage.

In 2016, the lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Preserving a Piece of History

Renovation Plans Underway

The lighthouse has suffered wear and deterioration over the years. LSMMA has launched initial planning efforts for its full restoration. Our goal is to renovate the structure and open it for public tours, allowing visitors to explore its rich maritime legacy firsthand.

Renovation Progress

LSMMA Hires a Consultant to complete a Historical Structures Report. This type of report is the first step in renovation a historical building.
