PRESERVING THE TWIN PORTS' MARITIME LEGACY SINCE 1973


The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association was formed as a 501c (3) nonprofit corporation in 1973 to collect and maintain artifacts relating to the maritime museum history of the Twin Ports.

1973 – LSMMA is Founded

The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association (LSMMA)

is established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to

preserving the maritime history of the Twin Ports.


 1973 – Visitor Center Opens

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opens the Lake

Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Duluth’s Canal Park,

focused on public education and operations.

 

LSMMA partners with the Corps to support the Visitor Center by:

Collecting and preserving maritime artifacts

Documenting local nautical history

Raising funds to enhance exhibits and programs

 

Ongoing Collaboration

A formal Memorandum of Agreement outlines LSMMA’s

role in supporting the Corps' mission, blending federal

resources with community-led preservation.

The LSMMA seeks:

  • To preserve the maritime heritage of Lake Superior and the Port of Duluth-Superior
  • To cooperate with the Corps of Engineers so as to acquire, preserve and exhibit maritime artifacts, documents, publications, and photographs
  • To fund development and presentation of educational and promotional programs, events, and publications pertaining to Lake Superior, the Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway System
  • To support the Lake Superior Maritime Collection at the University of Wisconsin-Superior
  • To assist other organizations in promoting and protecting our maritime heritage
  • To achieve the above with a growing membership of involved citizens who will provide financial resources through their membership and activities
