Preserving Great Lakes Maritime History
The Lake Superior Maritime Collection is a rich archive of materials documenting the maritime history of Lake Superior and the upper Great Lakes. Located in the Jim Dan Hill Library at the University of Wisconsin–Superior, the collection preserves stories of the region's ships, communities, and waterways.
Vital Research Resource
Supporting Learning Across Disciplines
An essential part of UW–Superior’s teaching and research mission, the Maritime Collection supports studies in aquatic biology, environmental science, transportation, logistics, and regional maritime history—especially focused on the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin.
Focused on Lake Superior, Reaching Beyond
Regional Roots, Global Context
While the collection centers on Lake Superior and the Duluth office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, its scope extends to the lower Great Lakes and international maritime trade. The global nature of shipping makes the collection relevant to broader historical and commercial research.
